High Risk OBSP Updates
September 14, 2020

Hello primary care colleagues,

As you know in March 2020, all cancer screening was suspended due to COVID-19. This suspension lasted > 17 weeks, creating a backlog in all imaging services. This has impacted the Waterloo Wellington High Risk Ontario Breast Screening Program’s (HR OBSP) mammogram and MRI wait times.

Your HR OBSP patients can expect a delay in their mammogram and MRI appointments. As per direction from Ontario Health-Cancer Care Ontario (OH-CCO), some patients may be screened with mammogram only this year.

Effective June 30, 2020, OH-CCO provided the following suggestions to make primary care providers aware of the cancer screening guidelines that may be used during the backlog. These are recommendations, and providers must take into account the unique circumstances of their patients and communities. Below is a summary of their recommendations with respect to MRI screening for breast cancer:

OBSP sites will screen participants using current screening guidelines. Where capacity challenges exist, sites may use the OH-CCO guidelines to prioritize screening for certain groups. During this time of ramp up service, please consider the appropriateness of all breast screening referrals. PLEASE NOTE – all women that have a breast concern (e.g. breast lump, discharge, etc.) should not be screened but have diagnostic imaging.

For the OH-CCO complete review that was previously shared, please see the COVID-19 TIP SHEET #15: GUIDANCE FOR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS RESUMING CANCER SCREENING.

Summaries of gradual phased resumption of cancer screening (from the Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Program, and OH-CCO) are available at http://www.cancercare4primarycare.com/en/covid-19.
